A berceuse is a soothing lullaby, often written in 6/8 and having a rhythm similar to a rocking cradle. This particular one is a variation on Paganini's famous theme for solo violin.
I composed this one to experiment with augmenting an existing theme. That means stretching the theme, often leaving out particular notes, which results in a simpler melody.
After the lullaby part there are several variations developing into a grand recapitulation in the pedal.
